Traunviertel is a region in Upper Austria, east of the Traun River, with a continental climate: warm summers (around 77°F/25°C) and snowy winters (lows near 23°F/-5°C). It's famous for the crystal-clear Traunsee lake and the historic town of Gmunden, where you can swim and sail in summer, then ice skate on the frozen lake come winter. For history buffs, the Hallstatt salt mines-among the oldest in the world-are a short drive south, offering year-round tours through underground tunnels.
