Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, is famous for the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, where vast white sand dunes fill with rainwater creating crystal-clear lagoons from April to October. The climate is hot year-round (80-95°F / 27-35°C), with a rainy season from January to May that fills the lagoons for swimming and a dry season from June to December ideal for off-road tours to the Preguiças River, where you can kitesurf or sail past pink dolphins. In the capital, São Luís, you can explore over 3,500 tiled colonial buildings from the 17th century, but skip the rainy summer if you want to avoid humidity.
