Alto Alentejo is a landlocked region in southern Portugal, famous for its rolling cork oak forests, whitewashed hilltop towns, and the 2nd-century Roman Temple of Évora. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers often above 95°F (35°C) perfect for wine tours in the Alentejo vineyards or exploring the megalithic Almendres Cromlech, and mild winters around 50-60°F (10-15°C) ideal for hiking in Serra de São Mamede or visiting the marble towns of Estremoz and Vila Viçosa. In spring, you can witness the cork harvest and see wildflowers blanketing the plains, while autumn brings the grape harvest and olive picking.
