Arges is a county in south-central Romania, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, with cold winters averaging 23°F (-5°C) and mild summers around 72°F (22°C). It's famous for the Transfagarasan Highway, which climbs to Balea Lake at 6,699 feet (2,042 meters), and for Poenari Fortress-the real castle of Vlad the Impaler, reachable by climbing 1,480 steps. In winter, you can ski at the Balea Lac resort, while summer brings hiking through the Fagaras Mountains and kayaking on Vidraru Lake, a reservoir held by the 545-foot (166-meter) Vidraru Dam.
