Ratnapura District in Sri Lanka's Sabaragamuwa Province is the country's gem capital, with a warm, wet climate averaging 27°C (80°F) daily. You can visit active gem mines or the Gem Museum year-round, but the drier December-to-February period is best for hiking to Bopath Ella waterfall or spotting wildlife in the nearby Sinharaja rainforest. If you come during the rainy months from April to July, you'll find cheaper accommodation and fewer tourists at indoor attractions.
